FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why invest in rain gutters?

The comfort of being able to enter and exit your home without getting wet is the most obvious reason for installing rain gutters.  But the advantages go much further than simple convenience.

Foundation problems – Problem gutters can dump gallons of water directly onto the ground next to the foundation of a house. Rain gutters will help eliminate the occurrence of mold, dampness and deterioration of the structure supporting your home!

Landscape washout –We spend thousands of dollars and time on our landscaping. Rain gutters prevent washing away and erosion of your property due to poor drainage. Your plants will love you for it! Rain gutters will prevent damage to your steps, decks and walkways by eliminating the ‘sheet of water’ that falls from the roofline.

Damaged fascia, soffit, or outside wall – Non-existent, leaky, or poorly installed gutters can damage a house’s structural integrity by allowing water to penetrate and damage the fascia, soffit, or the actual framing of the house – causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Gutters help keep the exterior of your home looking good.

Can gutters be installed on a metal roof?

Worth’s has been successfully installing rain gutters on difficult roofs for years. The addition of Gutter Topper allows the gutter to be covered so sliding snow and ice will glide over the top of the gutter and to the ground. The topper still allows rain water to enter the gutter.

Are gutters the reason for ice dams?

Ice dams occur when snow buildup melts during the day and refreezes when temperatures drop overnight. Snow melt on the roof is assisted by heat-loss through the attic. The water from the snow melt then refreezes when it reaches the cold surface over the soffit, where it begins to form a ridge of ice.

After several days of this melting-freezing cycle, the ridge of ice can become significant enough to retain water on the roof behind it.  Ice dams are typically the result of inadequate insulation and/or ventilation.  Properly installed insulation will reduce the heat-loss into attic space from living-space, however, ventilation is the most often overlooked factor.

Keeping the attic-space well ventilated will maintain a cool dry underside of the roof.  This will discourage the melting of the snow on the roof from any heat-loss. A properly insulated and ventilated attic will not only prevent ice-damming, it will save money in heating and cooling costs.

Clean your gutters every year to allow them to function properly

What are snow and ice restraint systems?

Snow and ice restraint systems are rooftop devices that allow snow and ice to drop off in small amounts or melt completely before falling to the ground. They prevent damage caused by avalanching of snow and ice that is typical for sloped roofs that have a smooth surface; ie: metal roofs, standing seam metal roofs, slate roofs, etc.

Why install gutter topper and what is it?

Gutter topper protects your home from the worries of clogged gutters and water damage. Gutter protection keeps leaves and debris out of your gutters. Doing so not only improves the functionality of your gutters, but also keeps you safe off the ladder.

Gutter protection protects more that just rain gutters; it protects you, your home, and your loved ones. Cleaning out rain gutters is the most dangerous job around the home, and also one of the dirtiest.

What truly is the nastiest job around the house?

Most people agree gutter cleaning is either number 1 or 2 or the list of things they wish they never had to do again. In fact every year hundreds of homeowners are killed from falls while cleaning out their gutters. Gutters have to be cleaned year after year so why not invest in gutter topper?

Clogged gutters overflow and can damage your home’s foundation and ruin your lawn and landscape. Clogged gutters can lead to:

  • Rotting and discoloration of the exterior of your home

  • Damaged wood fascia board

  • Roof damage

  • Cracked, leaking and deteriorating foundation walls

  • Soil erosion

  • Interior water seepage

  • Plant kill

  • Damp areas that promote insect infestation on the exterior and interior of your home

Clean gutters are the obvious solution, but keeping them clean year after year can be messy, costly and dangerous.

Can gutters be installed on gutter unfriendly houses?

Worth’s fabricates their own custom brackets and have been doing it successfully for twenty years. We have them powder coated to the color needed. The custom brackets are attached to the irregular style fascia to give us a more workable area to attach gutter and gutter topper to the building.

If you have never purchased rain gutters, do a little homework.

  • Talk to your friends and neighbors and find out what kind they have and if they’re satisfied with their choice in rain gutter. Were they happy with the contractor?

  • Talk to people who have had their rain gutters on for years, then find out who the contractor was.

  • If you live in a new area, ask your builder.

  • If you use the yellow pages or Internet, talk with several rain gutter contractors.

  • Consider selecting those contractors who have been in business the longest, and have solid reputations. These are the ones that usually do it right.

  • Be cautious when a company claims “20 years experience” and a 24 year old “owner” shows up.

  • Some contractors will advertise “I’ll beat anybody’s price!” (What they don’t tell you is that they will cut every corner to do it).

  • Ask for references; talk with past customers who have had their gutters on for at least five years.

  • Ask for trade affiliations, copies of their liability insurance, workers compensation insurance, business license, and contractor’s license.

  • Check with your Better Business Bureau and your Department of Consumer Affairs, Contractor License Board.

You will rarely offend a legitimate contractor by asking these questions and asking for copies of insurance certificates.

Keep this in mind; if a contractor cuts corners by not carrying insurance and proper licenses, he won’t hesitate to cut corners on the quality of your job.

If you are not satisfied, please let us know. We take pride in our business and look forward to a working relationship with you.
